Round 1 of the Hospital Cup delivered exactly the kind of drama the competition is known for, with Brothers Rugby Club edging out Souths Rugby Club 26–25 in a nail-biting season opener.

From the opening whistle, the contest carried the intensity of a mid-season clash rather than the first hit-out of the year. Both sides showed early ambition with ball in hand, but it was Brothers who struck a memorable moment in the 20th minute when debutant Kaelan Grafton announced himself in style, crossing for his first try in club colours. The score injected energy into the Brothers outfit and gave the home supporters a glimpse of the depth and promise within the squad.

Souths refused to fade, however, matching Brothers’ physicality and continually testing the defensive line. The scoreboard ticked along as momentum swung back and forth, the margin never stretching far enough to feel comfortable for either side.

As the match moved into its closing stages, Souths surged and set up a grandstand finish, pushing to snatch victory in the dying minutes. What followed was a tense defensive stand from Brothers that ultimately defined the afternoon. Phase after phase, Souths probed for a match-winning breakthrough, but the Brothers defensive line held firm under relentless pressure.

When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read 26–25, a one-point triumph that owed as much to grit and composure as it did to attacking flair. For Brothers, it was a statement start to the Hospital Cup campaign: a victory built on resilience, highlighted by a dream debut, and sealed by defence when it mattered most.

Round 1 also saw the Premier Women take the field, with Brothers Rugby Club facing Souths Rugby Club in a physical and hard-fought contest that ultimately finished 17–5 in Souths’ favour.

From the outset, the match was shaped by intensity and defensive resolve. Brothers showed plenty of attacking intent and created multiple opportunities inside Souths’ territory, applying sustained pressure that kept the contest alive throughout. However, time and again, Souths’ defensive line held firm under repeated raids, producing crucial goal-line stands that proved decisive in the final outcome.

Despite the result, the effort from Brothers never wavered. The side continued to press and search for openings, eventually breaking through for a try that reflected their persistence and work rate. Yet Souths’ defensive discipline and ability to absorb pressure ensured they maintained control of the scoreboard.

While the 17–5 result wasn’t the start Brothers hoped for, the performance offered clear positives heading into the early rounds of the Founders Cup season, a reminder that the foundations are there, and that the margins at this level are often defined by moments on the try line.

It was a dominant Saturday across the grades for Brothers Rugby Club, with the remaining men’s and Colts sides delivering a clean sweep to cap off a hugely successful opening round which also saw the Bola-Kefu Shield remain at Crosby Park for another season.

Second Grade had an impressive 40–14 victory, combining sharp attack with strong control through the middle to keep their opponents on the back foot. Third Grade followed suit, securing a convincing 35–18 win in another confident performance that showcased depth across the squad.

The momentum continued in Fourth Grade, where Brothers ran out emphatic 34–7 winners in a match built on physicality and discipline. By this point, the day’s results had already signalled a strong start to the season — but the Colts weren’t done yet.

Colts 1 produced an exciting 36–19 win, playing with tempo and attacking flair. Colts 2 opened the day in style with a commanding 62–12 victory that underlined the strength of the club’s pathway.

A clean sweep from the boys to open the season. A statement start and plenty of momentum heading into Round 2.
