Brothers secure crucial win over Sunnybank
Brothers have leapfrogged BLK Queensland Premier Rugby powerhouse Sunnybank on the table, after beating the Dragons 32-18 in Round 12.
The match pitted the competition’s two highest scoring attacking teams against each other, but Brother’s powerful defensive effort proved the difference in the heavyweight bout.
The return of recent Queensland Reds debutant flyhalf Sam Greene to the Brethren ranks helped Brothers outscore Sunnybank four tries to two in a bonus-point victory.
Brothers led 15-13 at halftime before adding 17 further points in the second to secure the result and third-place on the table.
Winger Mitch Felsman crossed for his sixth and seventh tries of the season in the match, carrying the Brothers flyer three short of Easts’ competition leading try-scorer Elliot Hagen.
Exciting young prop Taniela Tupou scored his second try of the season, while talismanic flanker Luke Beauchamp added Brothers’ final try.
Sunnybank winger Matthew Feaunati scored a try in each half in reply for the Dragons, while Queensland Under-20s flyhalf Mitchell Third added two penalties and a conversion.
Sunnybank’s revamped backline saw Alfonso Horomia record his first Premier Grade start in the inside centre jersey in place of the absent Henry Taefu.
Brothers will take on the challenge of Bond University in Round 13, wary of a side that demonstrated the ability to challenge the finals in the first half of the competition.
Sunnybank head back to the drawing board and will use a timely bye to prepare for their own Bond University challenge.
