Brothers v Norths
Brothers secured a convincing 42-15 win over Norths at Jack Ross Oval in Round 5 of BLK Queensland’s Premier Rugby.
Brothers fired out of the blocks after kick-off with winger Pierce Fitzgerald running across the line after only three minutes of play.
Despite an unsuccessful conversion, Sam Green slotted a penalty in the ninth minute, taking the score to 8-0.
Continuing to dominate possession, Brothers applied pressure inside Norths 22 metre until Ben Hyne pushed over in the 13th minute, with a successful conversion extending the lead to 15-0.
The Brethren crossed for a third try minutes later through prop Tom Maloney. With the conversion hitting the post, the score remained at 20-0.
Patience finally paid off for Norths in the 23rd minute with a penalty against Brothers allowing number 8 Daniel Crichton to push through a gap, taking the score to 20-5.
Off the back of a try and a series of penalties against Brothers, Norths continued to gain momentum with flanker Matt Ika running half of the field into Brothers’ 22 metre zone.
Brothers attempted to defend but Norths pressure was too much for fly-half Sam Green, kicking the ball out on the full.
Norths made the most of the opportunity with Ika rewarded for his earlier run, scoring off the throw in to narrow the score 20-10 at half time.
The start of the second half saw errors from both sides with Brothers centre Giles Beveridge yellow carded in the 51st minute.
Norths attempted to make the most of their one-man advantage but Brothers forced a penalty scrum to regain possession.
Within minutes Fitzgerald made another break for Brothers and supported by a run from reserve prop Adam Bennie, Fitzgerald crossed the line for his second try of the game extending the gap to 27-10 after a successful conversion.
Norths responded with a try minutes later with outside centre Tajhon Mailata dodging Sam Greene’s defence to cross in the corner reducing the gap to 27-15.
Unfortunately this was not enough for Norths with Brothers running away with the game late in the second half.
The brethren scored three tries in 15 minutes despite losing prop Taniela Tapou to a yellow card.
Brothers closed out the game 42-15.
Brothers coach Anthony Mathison said he was happy with how the team responded after last week’s break.
“We really needed last week off to re-group and re-focus,” Mathison said.
“As a result the team performed and we are happy with the win and where we are heading.
“We still need to make a few improvements but we will wait to assess our injuries before we decide on an approach for next week’s game against GPS” Mathison added.
Next week Brothers will play GPS at Yoku Road while Norths will take on Sunnybank at Hugh Courtney Oval.
