BROTHERS HOLD OFF SURGING SUNNYBANK
Brothers have held off a late Sunnybank onslaught to pick up their first win of the season in Round 1 of Queensland Premier Rugby.
Brothers started strong and had points on the board before Sunnybank had barely touched the ball, as Hugh Stitt crossed for the first of his two tries following some patient build up inside the Sunnybank half.
The home side continued to dominate the game for the next ten minutes and eventually were awarded a penalty directly in front of goal which flyhalf Clynton Knox took advantage of, taking the lead out to 8-0.
Brothers continued to dominate both possession and territory throughout the half and were rewarded once again with only ten minutes remaining, loosehead prop Ben Suisala crossing after the navy and white butcher stripes had set up camp inside the Dragons 22.
Knox missed the conversion and Sunnybank began to put some phases together soon after, as 2013 Australian Schoolboy and debutant flyhalf Mitch Third crossed for his first Premier Grade try right on half time, leaving the score at 13-5 going into the break.
The Dragons started to place real pressure on the home side at the beginning of the second term, as they took better care of the ball and started to bend the Brothers defensive line out wide.
They were rewarded for their improved play as winger Ryan Tongia scored and after Third converted the try, the Dragons had narrowed the lead to just one with 20 minutes to play.
Brothers counterpunched the Dragons with a try of their own, as Stitt burst through the defensive line and carried two defenders with him to plant the ball down.
However, Knox missed the conversion from nearly directly in front, and the Dragons were still only six points back with 15 minutes of play remaining.
Despite constant pressure in the last ten minutes, Brothers were too strong defensively and scrambled exceptionally well as they escaped with an 18-12 victory in front of the Brothers faithful.
