Wests claim fourth spot with win over Brothers

Wests came away with a 32-21 win over Brothers at Sci-Fleet Stadium on Saturday.

On their annual Old Dogs Day, Wests snuck into the top four with the win and have all but secured their place in the Queensland Premier Rugby finals.

Wests were first to score when a quick pick and drive play saw Cody Blackhurst dive over the line from close range.

Leading 7-0, Wests showed no signs of complacency, working the ball back into Brothers’ red zone before winger Filipo Daugunu produced some exceptional footwork to find his way to the try line, 12-0.

As half time approached, Brothers prop Tanieala Tupou sliced through the defence to narrow Wests’ half-time lead to five points.

After the break, Daugunu plucked a sharp intercept which saw him race away for the opening try of the second stanza and his second for the day.

Soon after, Brothers were stringing phases together on Wests line and flyhalf Patrick James found himself one-on-one before dotting down for the Brethren’s third.

With the score at 17-14, Wests’ Number 8 Dillon Wihongi broke through the line before drawing the last defender to put Lachlan Maranta over.

Wests’ flyhalf Paul Eti-Slater fired the ball out to inside centre Shai Wiperi who stepped his way through to extend Wests’ lead to 29-14.

Reuben Wall dotted down for the Brethren to reduce that lead but Wests fullback Byron Hutchinson slotted a later penalty goal to put the result beyond doubt for the home side.

Next weekend, Brothers return home to Crosby Park to host Sunnybank while Wests will welcome Norths to Sci-Fleet Stadium.
