The Eagles claim the Northern derby

Norths secured a 38-34 win over Brothers in Round 15 Queensland Premier Rugby at Hugh Courtney Oval on Saturday.

Norths’ Nubmer 8 Shane Tasi and scrumhalf Nick Chapman both dotted down for doubles as the Eagles ran in six tries to Brothers’ five.

The victory was the Eagles six for the year, providing the club with a mathematical chance of sneaking their way into finals contention over the coming weeks.

With half time approaching, Veresa Mataitini dived over in the corner before Brothers reclaimed the restart and Fraser McReight hit right back to give the Brethren a 17-12 half-time lead.

After the break, Garrath Ryan crawled his way over from close range before Mitch Felsman slotted a straight-forward penalty goal to extend the visitors lead.

A brilliant counter-attacking movement saw Tom Da Forno link up with Mataitini up the left-hand touchline before Brent Jones and Shane Tasi finished it off in the midfield.

Tasi crossed for a double in the 55th to peg back Brothers lead to three points after Nick Chapman’s conversion attempt sailed wide.

An intercept to Norths flyhalf Michael Burke saw Norths reclaim the lead in the 64th minute before Chapman zeroed in on a loose carry and kicked ahead to dot down for another try to Norths.

Brothers lock Emmanuel Latu burrowed his way over in the dying stages but any hope of Brothers snatching back a late victory were dashed when Burke booted the ball into touch.
