Sunnybank run rampant at Oldmac

Queensland Premier Rugby’s Game of the Round saw the Sunnybank Dragons come away with a 49-19 victory over Brothers at Oldmac Oval.

The Dragons soared in the second half, scoring six tries, with True Protein High Performer Junior Laloifi and former Brothers lock David Findlay-Henaway both claiming doubles.

Sunnybank utilised their kicking ability early in the game, claiming the initial lead through the boot of flyhalf Jake Strachan, but Brothers crossed for the first try through lock Emmanuel Meafou.

In slippery condition, errors were made and frustration resulted in yellow cards to Sunnybank’s Franko Abdalla, Feao Fotuaika, and Brothers’ prop Taniela Tupou.

Brothers’ failure to find touch with their clearances presented Sunnybank’s sweeping backline with numerous counter-attacking opportunities. This was a highlighted by Strachan’s try that saw the Dragons claim a 13-7 lead.

Shortly after, Brothers hit back as Mitch Felsman scored out wide to make it a one-point ball game at half time.

Brothers hooker Francois Postal claimed the first try of the second half but it was all downhill from there for the Brethren as the Dragons carried out a second-half onslaught, scoring six consecutive tries.

“Our back line was on fire, watching them do what they do is always enjoyable,” Sunnybank captain Brendan Mitchell said.

St.George Queensland Reds Jack McIntyre and Henry Taefu helped extend the Dragons’ lead through successful conversions after Strachan came off due to injury, late in the second half.

“Despite the score, today was a hugely a physical game, but through our ability to continuously build pressure, we were able to get away with the win,” Mitchell said.

This weekend Sunnybank head down to Bond University while Brothers will have the week off with the bye.
