University retain top spot after taking out the Brethren
The BLK Premier Rugby Match of the Round saw the University of Queensland secure an important 47-35 victory over Brothers in a top-of-the-table clash at Jack Ross Oval.
Under the lights at the Brethren’s home ground, both teams showed their attacking prowess, combining for 12 tries.
The Red Heavies looked to open scoring early when James Dalgleish sliced through from deep inside the Student’s own half, linking with Jock Campbell who was eventually tackled short of the line.
The Brethren were penalised at the ruck and Pat Morrey (University) capitalised with a quick tap and crossed for his first of two tries. University extended their lead to 14-0 moments later when a slick cut-out ball found flanker Conor Mitchell waiting out wide.
Trailing on the scoreboard, but showing composure in attack, the Brethren were desperate and when Elih Baillie crashed through the Heavies defence, Brothers secured their first points of the match.
The home side had all the momentum and quickly added to their tally when front-rower Dustin Henegan went through unscathed levelling the scores with just 10 minutes remaining in the first-half.
University showed how important it is to play right to the half-time whistle, with two late first-half tries. Pat Morrey crashed over for his second of the match, before Scott Gale made a darting run to the line taking the Red Heavies out to a 26-14 lead as the teams headed into the sheds.
Universities scrum has consistently delivered the side points in recent weeks and they continued this trend with an impressive push-over try to Jack Cornelsen early into the second stanza.
But Brothers returned serve with two quick tries to Richie Skelton who crossed beside the uprights and Ted Postal, who showed great vision to catch the Red Heavies defence napping. The Brethren reduced the deficit to just five points with 20 minutes remaining.
Brothers were probing deep into Universities territory when fullback Tom Banks pounced on a dropped ball, racing away down the sideline before linking with Jock Campbell, in a brilliant display of counter-attack Rugby.
Two late tries apiece saw the final score extend to 47-35, as University secured their 10th win in a row.
